Welcome to The Hub…The Center of Knowledge

On April 16, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed more than 3,000 human beings from bondage in the District of Columbia. It was the first of several acts towards the total eradication of slavery in America. It was also the first breath of freedom among the slave-holding territories.

Emancipation Day is now a legal holiday in D.C. There are similar holidays celebrated throughout the world.

On April 16, 2017, Emancipation Day, The Hub will launch.
